After years of working informally in the barrios, we finally went the next step. We created a legal foundation; based in Ecuador as a registered non-profit.
It has been a whirlwind ride for sure.
During Lockdown
During the height of the lockdown in March 2020 we stopped all current works to begin food distribution. The day workers failed quickly. They were unable to go out on the streets to earn a dollar. Without funds, fridges, or real jobs, the situation for them went from bad to terrible within 48 hours.
Joining forces with Amy Prisco and Bettina Widmer, we created a food distribution network that provided 25,000 kits of food to families in our area. This was only possible with the support from near and far. The donations kept flowing, as did the delivery trucks of food. At times, deliveries were made using dump trucks.
Returning to normal?
As society began to open back up, we all went back to our previous lives. Trying to pick up the pieces. During food deliveries, our eyes had been opened to so many more areas of deep poverty. Ecuador from the Heart started looking at how to make a difference in much bigger ways. The level of poverty here and around the world has increased exponentially and to make a lasting difference, we needed to take our projects to the next level.
Now that we are a registered non-profit, more doors and opportunities have opened up. With increased resources, we can help more people.
To creating lasting change for those living in extreme poverty, we chose to re-focus our attention to lifting. Instead of reactive band-aids for each crisis, our focus is to empower them to find a way to break the cycle of poverty through various projects and crisis management.
We partner with many organizations: local, national and international. I will be sharing each of the current and future projects here in the coming weeks.
